Christine Rucci aka “Godmother NYC ” is a New York based Denim Design consultant and owner of Godmother Inc. For Rucci, design is literally in her “genes.” Her great grandmother, an Italian immigrant, who came to America in the early 1900’s worked in the garment district as a seamstress. At age 10, Rucci designed her first piece for a Levis-sponsored contest. A few years later, in August 1981, she bought her first W magazine, and upon seeing an ad for Ralph Lauren Roughwear, made a vow that she would become a designer and one day work for him. After attending FIT, she got her formal denim design training working in Italy for Adriano Goldschmied, Renzo Rosso (Diesel), Claudio Buziol (Replay), and later, François Girbaud, who taught her about washing. Rucci then returned to New York and went to work for Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Tommy Hilfiger (where she launched Tommy jeans), Marc Jacobs, and finally Ralph Lauren, where she designed the Double RL line, and learned, amongst other things, the importance of knowing the history of clothing. “Ralph taught me you have to look backward to move forward.” With more then 35 years experience in design and product development, Godmother NYC’s resume reads like a who’s who of the fashion industry.
